Why do we imagine that we are better at nuclear waste (Hawke in plug for N-waste, Aug 19) than the Americans?
In 2004 I wrote (The Devil’s Trap – Amazon, 2006) that we would become the nuclear waste dump for the planet. I was ridiculed by local publishers who imagined that Australians wouldn’t tolerate such circumstances. My book outlines the scheme whereby Australia decides that the nuclear waste industry would be more profitable for the country than agriculture.
In 2005 Bob Hawke mooted, along with present cabinet minister, Martin Ferguson, that Australia should be a nuclear dump.
In that year ABC rural radio reported that our waterways were being monitored for flow and mineral content by a private American company. A check on the Washington state nuclear dumps revealed (Washington State website) that they were all leaking into theColumbia River. In 2006 John Howard had a secret briefing with the Bush administration on nuclear waste. Earlier this year the finance for new nuclear dumps was cut from the American budget. In response to requests under freedom of information the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet refused to search for documents about the nuclear talks. It seems to be adding up to me.
The talks with John Howard were held the day before The Devil’s Trap was launched in July 2006 at the Williamstown Literary Festival.
Several weeks ago Catalyst (ABC-TV) revealed that granite found at Lake Boga in the north of Victoria is the only granite on the planet that will cope with holding nuclear waste for hundreds of thousands of years. Really? My speculation in The Devil’s Trap is that Lake Boga will be the location of the dump. I’m sceptical about the claim that Lake Boga has the only substance that can contain nuclear waste.
The problem is that the longest lasting structures on the planet are the pyramids and they’re not much over ten thousand years old. No one knew what they were built for until several centuries ago when they were examined by British archaeologists. What will be made of our dumps three hundred thousand years from now? Will the countries who dumped it in Australia still be paying for the
maintenance? Will the countries still exist?
Most Afghan men are rotten lovers. They like the new law that allows them to withhold food and drink unless the woman gives them sex? And was that clothes as well? I heard it on the run and thought those poor bloody men brought up without any knowledge of loving - or even carnal - sex.
But honestly, for their mug leader to show the world the lowest common denominator of Afghan men when it comes to women (by passing the law in the first place), leaves their nation wide open to ridicule, AND the question of why we have troops there trying to save such a pathetic regime.
The real answer to the last question is that the west is scared to take on the real terrorist threat, Pakistan, because they have nuclear weapons and are stupid enough to use them (see previous posts). So its about attempting to drain the resources of the terrorist by pretending to fight them (unsuccessfully) in Afghanistan. It's not going to work. Any nation that antagonises half their potential support group (the women) by having the men roast the leg of a goat outside their partners' rooms and threaten to eat it all by themselves unless their "partners" prepare themselves for oppressive sex, is going to lapse back to prehistoric times. Maybe they're there already - with the West's help.
WE'VE LOST THE BATTLE ON CLIMATE CHANGE BECAUSE NO GOVERNMENT HAS PERFORMED ANY ACT THAT IS GOING TO DELAY IT. IT'S TOO LATE. I EXPECTED A BREAK THROUGH BY OBAMA AT THE G8.
BUT AS BAD AS THIS IS THE ENCOURAGING OF TOXIC POLLUTION IS EVEN WORSE IN THE SHORT TERM .
THIS PARAPHRASING IS FROM THE WASHINGTON POST TODAY: "OVER TWO HUNDRED INDUSTRIAL POLLUTANTS ARE FOUND IN ALL BABIES' UMBILICAL CORDS. TENS OF THOUSANDS OF CHEMICALS ARE UNTESTED BEFORE USE, OR ARE TESTED BY THE CHEMICAL COMPANIES THEMSELVES."
SUCH SLACKNESS DOES MAKE ME ANGRY. WE KNOW HOW HONEST AND SINCERE ARE THE EXECUTIVES WHO RUN THE PLANETS LARGE AND GREEDY MONEY-MAKING FACTORIES. THEY BROUGHT AOUT THE COMING DEPRESSION. DON'T BELIEVE THE GOOD NEWS. TOXIC ASSETS ARE STILL OUT THERE IN HUGE AMOUNTS BEING TRADED BY THE BIG BANKS AND REPORTED TO THE SHAREHOLDERS AS ASSETS.
