In his documentary Sugar Rush, the celebrated TV chef discovered that the Brits are consuming as many as 40 teaspoons of sugar per day. The sad truth is, excess sugar wreaks havoc on the liver and affects insulin levels, eventually leading to Type 2 diabetes in most cases.

Moreover, Smylife notes that unhealthy levels of sugar are contributing to an epidemic of bad teeth. In fact, there are shocking scenes in the documentary, where a five-year-old fizzy drink fan is required to undergo an operation to remove several teeth.

Sugar’s Role in Tooth Decay

The biggest problem with sugar is that plays a big role in tooth decay. The bacteria in the mouth that become plaque depend on sugar and convert it into energy.  Sugar also allows the bacteria to multiply faster, causing the plaque to grow in size and thickness. Bacteria can also turn into some kind of the glue that they use to stick on the tooth’s surface.

Cut Back on Sugar Consumption

With all its devastating effects, it is easy to figure out where Jamie’s hatred of sugar is coming from. Whilst his battle to put a tax on sugar products has been declined, people can still support his initiative by cutting back on sugar consumption. Increased waistlines and rotten teeth can be alleviated if people learn to be wise about how they consume sugar.

Those with rotten teeth due to excessive sugar consumption need to seek dental treatments and possibly stay away from sugary treats.
