UTTER DERELICTION OF GOVERNMENT DUTY ON GM

July 20th 2008 01:49
Promoters of GM are risking the destruction of the healing power of natural foods. They have no research for the assertions that GM doesn't alter the benefits of traditional food. It hasn't been attempted. There are rumours of GM soybean research in New Zealand in which all the rats died but I can't yet track it down. Reports from the US on GM canola indicate stomach ailments result from its consumption, however again no research so no one can sue. Meanwhile there is no other authoritative information on its alleged benefits for the starving on the planet, apart from the promoters' claims.

Scientists tend not to believe that natural products have healing power unless it has been highly refined, or copied synthetically (after all there are jobs there).

HRI-alert tell me that many studies have found, for instance, that onions and celery remove plaque from the walls of arteries and veins quickly. There have been no studies on GM onions or celery, maybe there will be when they think they can alter them for less water, more sun, or the next wave of insects. Point is though that they don't have to. But common sense warns you that lobster, spiders or elephant genes may alter the responses of the other natural chemicals - or your body - as they pass through your stomach.

GM is being promoted by huge companies like Monsanto who take the capacity to create seeds out of your fruit and vegetable plants so that they can sell you and the farmers more seed next year. They also sell pesticides and herbicides and so make the plants more resistant to those products so the farmers can use more. The conclusion is that there is an utter dereliction of duty by our governments not to demand appropriate research. They don't even think about it because we have great and retired scientists saying GM is going to save future generations from starving. Any research, apart from that performed by deceptive marketing companies? No.

That's another eye-opener, Bill.

Always find your sentences judicious.

HEAR HEAR!! Well said Bill!

The original research, done by the English scientist many years ago, which found the GM grain fed to rats proved to shrink their brain, was then denounced, he was fired from his university chair, and hounded by press and courts, all because of some minor mistake.

However, four European scientists followed up on his research some years later and they released a statement I think one or two years ago, that basically he was right, and since then, another scientist has come out, (I think European) and stated GM overall shrinks the organs of whatever is eating it and promotes tumour growth.

I felt that this was such a dangerous and serious problem, that I put to an ex leader of the Labor party, when in opposition six years ago or so, and he had no answer to it, saying, it must be OK, as there is no government research saying there is a problem!

Of course not, all research has been funded by, and the research scientists hand picked by, the companies standing to financially gain from its use!!

Furthermore, an old boy from my old college, Sir Gustav Nossal, came out recently, at the behest of the government, saying it was ok to import and use GM here; but what was his justification?

Nossal stated that, "The farmers seem to want it!"

What appals me is, once this monster is out of the box, we may not get it back in! The Japanese and the European Economic Union begged our NSW government to not import GM, this up until this year! Why? Because Australia has the last commercial size crop of NON-GM canola left in the world!!

Ask yourself this question;
is it just a matter of a government not being bothered researching this imdependantly, just to save itself money, or is there other pressures/motivations causing it to ignore the growing evidence that GM is a danger to public health and bio-diversity?

Remember this, the single most pressing problem for the world, as seen by the Pentagon et al, is overpopulation.

Also, they identified that the two most effective weapons, in cost and mass effect, are control of water supply and food.

It does not take Einstien to see where all this may be heading!

Thanks fog, your piece is even clearer than the original. Sir Gustav Nossal hasn't actually quoted research in the interviews I've read and seen but because he was so accurate with his own, as a researcher, that he's been blinded by the overwhelming opinion from fellow scientists paid by the GM companies. I would hate to imagine that he was in their pay.

Hi Bill,

I too hope Nossal hasn't been bought off, I doubt he could stoop that low actualy, however, he may be persuaded to rubber stamp something the government is needing help with, under the excuse that it is good for protectin against drought etc, and maybe he decided not to investigate himself.

The government would not have given him much, if any, funding to do research on it anyway.

It greatly worries me, and I am flabbergasted as to the general indifference of the public.

Also, the last Federal administration, when asked to label all GM food on the supermarket shelves, stated that itwas impossible to do so, as some ingredients come from overseas, so they could be GM, or may not be.

Solution; just put "overseas content: GM unknown", problem solved. Soon, companies will get the message, when no one buys the stuff.

Odd that Britain has no problem with GM labelling, and has done so for years now, but not our lot!

I do note, that some research shows 85% I think it was, do not want to eat GM. All we have to do is, find out how to motivate them into writing letters about it to newspapers and local MPs.

It is depressing...

cheers

Norm, I've been stewing over, "judicious." Sure, I'll accept it.
Cheers, Bill.
