PSYCHOPATH MADOFF IS REALLY TED BUNDY

January 31st 2009 21:31
Bernard L. Madoff is really Ted Bundy (yes, the serial killer).

Conservative people, those of CEO persuasion perhaps, would laugh at that. They'd point to previous posts of mine like Banks are Really Bank Robbers etc and indulge in ridicule. That's because they haven' come to grips with the new world in the way of The New York Times. For it was the NYT's journalists Julie Creswell and Landon Thomas Jnr who put forward this proposition in the January 25 edition.

They quote J. Reid Meloy, a forensic psychologists whose special expertise is the criminal mind.
"Typically, people with psychopathic personalities don't fear getting caught. They tend to be very narcissistic with a strong sense of entitlement."

Forensic psychologists see similarities between Madoff and Bundy. Bundy murdered people, Madoff murdered bank accounts, wallets and people's sense of financial security and trust. Like Bundy, Madoff used a sharp mind and an affable demeanor to create a persona that didn't exist. And when puiblicily accused, he seemed to show no remorse

"Psychopaths believe they're above the law.' Madoff courted public regulators even at the risk of exposing themselves. In a scheme like this it's very important to keep those who threaten you close to you. It would have been a heady and intoxicating experience and would have fueled a sense of entitlement and grandiosity.

ALL THIS SHOULD REMIND YOU OF THE MURDERER IN THAT GREAT NOVEL, CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. IN FACT ALL THE VERY REAL STUFF HAS BEEN REVEALED BY THE GREAT FICTION. IF PEOPLE READ THEY WOULDN'T BE FOOLED QUITE SO EASILY. AFTER ALL THERE IS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN.

Good one, Bill. Can't agree more.

I've read the first chapter of Freud and the Nazis.

You're a truly great writer. I'm a slow and hopeless reader. But I'll finish it, one of these days. I hope you're still writing creatively. The play? How's that going?

Hi Bill,
I remember reading an article ages ago, written about a female psychologist (American?) who put all the big company execs. and leaders of powerful nations to a test, meant to profile psychopaths, and they all came through with flying colours!

The day we as a people stop electing and/or promoting the psychopaths in the world, might just be the day we first start down the path of global peace and self-enlightenment.

Cheers and great point about reading the great works, fiction and historical, in order to develop a mind that can discern truth from fiction more readily.

On that last point, is it any wonder that right wing governments always make learning at the higher level economically out of reach for the lower income brackets, and give the lower monetary class just the basics? Oh, I forgot to say, even at tertiary level, they have slowly rid the universities of the humanities, (philosophy etc) and funded it all towards job opportunity.

It was always masters of the philosophical arts that brought the human condition further along a humane path, never the pure capitalists, who do not want a populace of free thinkers, but a slavish and easily controlled work force.

A glance back at very recent history shows deceptive and self-serving behavioiur in many so-called leaders - but I think the willingness of ordinary people to be led without protest is more to blame.
I saw a bit of a program on tv a while ago...some test...ordinary people were led to inflict what they believed were strong electrical currents on their fellows, essentially because they were induced to accept the 'authority' of the persons who ordered them to do so.
Regarding the changes to tertiary courses: that is just so sad. My daughter got a place at Melbourne Uni and dropped out within a couple of weeks because it was compulsory to take a a number of core of subjects that she said were boring and useless. I think it mainly has to do with funding. Tertiary institutions now have to make profits, just like all our public services. Focus on job opportunities would be fine if there wasn't such a job shortage. I know I have diverged somewhat from the topic here but it seems to me that it is all about the government 'looking' like they are doing something and not addressing the real issues.
