Talking Headlines - by Bill Green

MARTIN FERGUSON HAS PUT AUSTRALIA ON LINE TO TEND THE WORLD'S CRAPULOUS NUCLEAR WASTE

June 8th 2008 23:53
The moves for Australia to be the nuclear waste dump for the world are rapidly being slotted into place.

On a public holiday, and with the pm Rudd on his Japanese trip - no doubt talking up a deal to take Japanese waste - Martin Ferguson, our esteemed Resources and Energy Minister shows his scheming attitude to this outrageous project that will turn Australia internationally into a total pariah, agriculturally, culturally, and into an example of how to turn a country from being one of the freest to one of total lock down. It is the reason the Rudd government has not even begun looking at the oppressive laws on so called terrorism.

They naturally imagine we would be an easy terrorist target.

Way back in 2006 Martin Ferguson and Bob Hawke were promoting our country as a nuclear waste dump. For Rudd to employ Ferguson as the minister for nuclear waste is to reveal that he, Rudd, is also in favour of such a denigration of the nation's future. Having seen up close the way ministers are chosen ( I was a press secretary to a dpm) I can assure you that an individual who is not towing the leader's line ( in the days before Rudd it was the party's line) will not get a ministry that he could use to his advantage.

Now he has made the announcement that is only the thin-edge of the wedge: domestic waste, he says. But he hasn't said it would be exclusively domestic waste. His adoption outright of the Howard government's legislation for dumps in the Northern territory is certainly surprising.

Ferguson is delighting in this power to that enables him to be a strong man instead of Bob Hawke's dancing fool. The cost to the country is that we look after this nuclear waste( mild to the most crapulous) for at least 250,000 years. Has anyone even considered this? The oldest man made structures that are in existence today are the pyramids. They are around 8 to 10 thousand years old. No one knew what they were for until British archaeologists began digging around them 150 years ago. I'm certain country's who send us waste will not exist in a few hundred years let alone a 1,000 or 250,000, and who will be paying for the expense of looking after it as it gets more hazardous. Surely they will imagine that we will be forced to look after it ourselves, to protect our mutant off-spring.

My emotion at what was being planned back in 2002 led me to write a prophetic novel, The Devil's Trap ... set to catch friends. It documents the way nuclear waste will be foisted on this country. It's on track. On the day the book was launched at the 2006 Williamstown Literary Festival, Richard Baker of The Age wrote that an open-ended nuclear deal was being forged in Washington with our visiting Prime Minister.
