THE NUCLEAR ARMS SPIN IS TO MAKE US FORGET ABOUT THE WORLD'S WASTE
June 10th 2008 01:04
The spin is on to convince Australians that their government is very concerned about nuclear arms and it's going to do its best to neutralise them. That announcement by Kevin Rudd in Japan was close to ridiculous. It makes it appear that we're going to lead the world to nuclear disarmament by example and announcement.
The problem is that we aren't a nuclear-armed nation, and that means anything we say will be completely ignored. If you don't know the political machinations, and don't have a bureaucracy dedicated to such arms manufacture, it's a little like listening to a pony club rider tell a race jockey how to win.
So why the spin?
It's to take away the anxiety we have about nuclear waste coming to the country and our being responsible for its safety for 250,000 to 500,000 years. Note the timing. Martin Ferguson's waste announcement on Saturday and Kevin's announcement the following day. Did it stop you dead? Hey, we've got a very concerned government, who hate anything nuclear.
In fact it camouflaged the deal we're making with Japan to take their nuclear waste. Poor old Japan doesn't have vast unpopulated spaces where the occasional waste leak will be unnoticed and they're planning more nuclear power stations.
